Roy heard a familiar tinkling coming from somewhere, but didn’t know what it was.

On some level, he recognized the sound but couldn’t place it.

He was safely cocooned inside the most comfortable shelter. As long as he remained calm, he would always feel at peace.

Yet something kept scratching at the back of his mind. Why was he surrounded by total darkness? Hadn’t morning come yet? Shouldn’t he be getting ready for work? Work. What was work? Somewhere he went, something he had to do.

A duty he shouldn’t ignore because he was in the middle of an investigation—Molly, Steven, the roof, they were all connected somehow.

“I have to go to work.”

He owed it to Steven, the young deputy who’d lost his life when he was pushed over the roof. He owed it to Molly, the young girl who didn’t speak to anyone because she was traumatized. And he owed it to Kae. Kaelyn needed him. Now more than ever.

“I need to wake up.”

You are awake.

Roy sat up and his eyes were already opened, but he didn’t recognize his surroundings. He wasn’t in his backyard. He should be there. That’s where he’d ended up after something smacked into the side of his house.

He reached for his gun, but it wasn’t there.

The tinkling sound came again, followed by a beep.

“Is that… is that my phone?” He could feel it, tucked into his back pocket, unreachable because his limbs refused to work. “Where am I?”

You’re home.

“This isn’t home.” Home was with Kae.

He stared at the thick branches overhead as the leaves rustled in the wind that didn’t reach him. Caught sight of another overcast day peeking through the thick canopy, and the glare hurt his eyes.

Roy could see, but couldn’t feel.

Sudden excruciating pain tore him apart, snapped his bones and stretched his skin. Curved his spine until he was bent backwards and staring at an upside-down world without a sky.
