Taylor slapped together a few sandwiches as the can of chicken noodle soup warmed in the small pot on the stove. Sliced apples and a handful of potato chips rounded out Alexâs snack, while six ice cubes cooled his tea.
He was sleeping when she walked into the family room, and she quietly slid the serving tray onto the coffee table. A glance at the grandfather clock in the hall told her sheâd have to wake him in a few minutes anyway, to check the dilation of his pupils. She saw no point in waking him now.
Sliding onto the seat of the overstuffed chair facing the sofa, Taylor drew up her legs, hugged them to her chest. Chin resting on her knees, she watched the steady rise and fall of his broad chest.
He had such long, dark eyelashes. And that thick, shining hair of his.
A lock had fallen across one eye, giving him a little-boy quality that stirred everything womanly in her. If not for fear of waking him, sheâd brush it from his forehead right this minute!
He licked his lips and, frowning slightly, murmured something unintelligible under his breath.
And Taylor held hers.
Oh, how she yearned to take those few steps from her chair to where he drowsed so peacefully. Under different circumstances, sheâd sit on the floor beside him, rest her head on his shoulder, press sweet kisses to his well-chiseled cheek. And tell him the truth that had been growing inside her, almost from the moment heâd bumped into her lifeâ¦that sheâ
âDidnât your mama teach you that itâs rude to stare?â he asked without opening his eyes.
Though he spoke softly, slowly, the sound of his voice made Taylor lurch slightly. How could he have known sheâd been sitting there studying him, if heâd been fast asleep?
âIâm a mind reader,â he answered her unasked question. âPlus, you wouldnât believe how clearly a person can see through the slits in his eyes.â One eye winked open, one corner of his mouth turned up in a sly grin. âTruth is, I smelled the soup. My growling stomach is what woke me, not the fact that youâve been boring two little holes into me for the past five minutes.â
Taylor unfolded herself from the easy chair. âPerfect timing. Youâre just in time for an eye exam.â Wiggling her eyebrows, she grabbed the flashlight from where sheâd stashed it in an end-table drawer. Kneeling beside him, she turned it on. âFocus on the ceilingâ¦Cyclops.â
Smirking and shaking his head, Alex did as he was told. âHow much longer do we have to do this?â he asked, frowning as she flicked short, quick bursts of light across his pupils. âMy fifth-grade science teacher told me it wasnât visually healthy to stare into the light. Any light. Ever.â
âDonât worry,â she assured him, laughing, âyouâll still be able to see the Orioles play baseball when this is over.â
With no warning whatever, he wrapped his hands around her wrists, pulling her near. âOnly thing Iâm worried about is that I wonât be able to see you.
