Chapter Sixteen

The most delicious smell attacks my nose. It’s like my senses wake up before my eyes do. It’s pancakes, which means today must be Saturday and Dad’s making his awesome, special breakfast reserved only for the weekends, when we are all together as a family. I smile in my half-sleep state, anticipating the taste of the batter, syrup, blueberries…

My eyes snap open. I’m lying in an unfamiliar room.

It takes a moment for it all to come back. Today is not Saturday and Dad’s not making his special breakfast. Because my father is dead. And I’m stuck in a fantasy world.

Slowly, I sit up, stretching my arms above my head. I feel so rested. Like I slept for days. I guess I hadn’t realized how much sleep I was losing when I crashed at the bandit camp.

The smell attacks my nose again. Either Ally somehow managed to get a chef or force an NPC to serve her, or she’s the one making breakfast.

Something scratches on the door to my room. When I open it, I find Frizzball hopping on her back legs.

“Hey.” I scoop her up. She licks my face. Then she frees herself from my arms, leaps to the floor, and wags her tail at me. I guess she wants me to follow her.

Ally’s standing in front of a fire pit. She’s got a frying pan in her hand—well, it looks like a frying pan—and is gently tilting it from right to left. There’s batter in there. On the table are plates with pancakes.

“Smells awesome,” I say.

She turns around sharply.

“Sorry,” I say. “Didn’t mean to scare you.”

“It’s okay. I almost forgot you’re here.”

She’s wearing a dress. Not a mage’s robe like I have, but an actual dress. It’s a dark green color, kinda fancy-looking, reaching all the way to her shoes, which are flat and seem very comfortable. It’s got some swirly designs all over and a white layer underneath. Her hair is loose on her shoulders with some strands gathered by a pin over her right ear.

“What are you staring at?” she demands. Then she quickly turns around and flips the pancake with a spatula.

“Nothing. You look nice, that’s all.”

“The only time I can wear this is in my house. When I go out there, I need my armor.”

“Yeah. I’m starting to see how desperately I need a house. So…you made pancakes.”

“I think my mom would faint if she knew I learned how to cook here.” She transfers the pancake to another plate. “Not like I had anything else to do all these months.” She moves to the table and sits down. “Are you going to join me?”

“Yeah, sorry. I just feel like I owe you.”

“For what?” she asks as I reach for a plate stacked with three pancakes. “Warning, they’re not the best.”

“You can never go wrong with pancakes.” I cut off a piece and take a bite. “Really good!”

She rolls her eyes. “Shut up.”

“No, I mean it. The only thing missing is syrup.”

“Well, I’m no miracle worker.
