CHAPTER 21

LIAM

There was no way in hell I was going to be late to the airport this time. Since the moment Mikaela’s flight had taken off, I’d been tracking it on a neat little app called FlightAware so I would know precisely the moment it touched down at the local airport. Before it even began to make its final descent, I was parked, out of my car, and on my way to the ground transportation area of the main terminal. Gone were the days when people used to get off the plane and run directly into their waiting loved one’s arms, but this was the best I could do.

To make it even more special, I’d made her one of those signs that the guys who drove the limos used. It always made me feel a little more special to see my last name written on a white piece of paper for some reason. I stood in line with the other people waiting to pick up their fares, though mine wouldn’t be paying me in anything except for kisses—I hoped.

When I saw Mikaela come down the escalator, her carry-on suitcase beside her, I couldn’t help the huge grin that spread across my face. She didn’t see me at first. Her eyes darted across the crowd of people, looking for familiarity. It was the sign with her last name on it that caused her eyes to stop moving. Grinning, she lifted her gaze to meet mine, and then she started giggling.

Now that she’d gotten the full effect of my sign, I put it down and rushed over to her. We got to have our “running across a field of flowers to embrace” moment after all, it just wasn’t quite the same as in all of those 1990-era rom-coms. Mikaela let go of her bag and wrapped her arms around me as I leaned down to kiss her cheek.

“Nice touch,” she said, lifting her head to look at me. “The sign, I mean.”

“Well, you know. I couldn’t take any chances on you getting lost. If you’d gotten into a car with someone else, I’m not sure what I’d do.” I brushed her hair back from her face, so happy to see her again. I was afraid things might be a little awkward, but they didn’t seem that way at all.

“I see you’re wearing a suit I haven’t seen.” She smirked at me, her eyelashes fluttering.

“My closet in Vancouver is a little bigger than the suitcase I lost,” I assured her. “Are you ready to go?” I took hold of her bag and started wheeling it toward the exit. “Unless, of course, you’d like to grab a cup of coffee you could almost spill on me.” It was my turn to give her a snide grin.

I was glad to hear her laugh. Slipping her fingers into my hand, she said, “Actually, I already poured an entire cup on another guy. He’s still back there cursing at me now.” She pointed over her shoulder toward the escalator.
