Excuses: Eliminate Them
One of the most striking things that separates people who sustain their success from those who are only briefly or never successful is their strong sense of responsibility for their own actions. It is easier to move from failure to success than it is from excuses to success.
According to Bruce Nash, author of a series of âHall of Shameâ books on sports figures, one notorious person for making excuses was Rafael Septien, former placekicker for the NFLâs Dallas Cowboys. Nash wrote, âWeâre all guilty of using excuses. When we do, we place ourselves in the company of great sports heroes. Take Rafael Septien, for example. Rafael Septien has no peersâwhen it comes to making up lamebrained excuses for missed field goals.â Among the excuses, perhaps tongue-in-cheek, that Septien offered:
âI was too busy reading my stats on the scoreboard.â
âThe grass was too tall.â (Texas Stadium doesnât even have grass; its surface is artificial turf.)
âThe thirty-second clock distracted me.â
âMy helmet was too tight and it was squeezing my brain. I couldnât think.â
âNo wonder [I missed]. You placed the ball upside downâ (said to his holder).6
