Intrinsic (plantar) foot muscles The intrinsic muscles in the sole are grouped into four layers: The first layer of muscles is the most superficial to the sole and is located immediately underneath the plantar fascia tendons and fat pads. Most of the other intrinsic muscles are located deep in the sole of the foot. The only muscles regularly seen are in this first layer:

A. Flexor digitorum brevis: A large central muscle that flexes the second to fifth toes.

B. Abductor digiti minimi: Responsible for flexion and abduction of the fifth toe.

C. Abductor hallucis: Abducts the big toe (spreads it outward).

The bulging form of the abductor digiti minimi is concealed for the most part by plantar fat, which blends with the form.

Plantar aponeurosis The plantar aponeurosis is a strong fibrous band of fascia that extends along the bottom of the foot. It lies on top of the foot muscles, passing from the heel toward the toes. It assists in maintaining the longitudinal arches of the foot and provides areas for muscle attachment. The lateral and middle portions of this ligament can be faintly seen on the surface of the foot.

1. Fibrous digital sheath, first distal phalanx

2. Lateral plantar fascia

3. Middle plantar eminence
