Where Can You Network?
Worried about where to meet these amazing people? The good news is you can meet them anywhere, from standing in line for a coffee, to sitting next to them on an airplane, to having your kids play for the same soccer team, to job fairs, corporate open houses and hiring events, meetups, and everywhere in between. You can meet networking contacts anywhere.
Job Fairs
Also known as career expos or career fairs, job fairs will likely play a role in your transition to a civilian career. Job fairs provide the opportunity for a group of employers to share their programs, job openings, career options, and company highlights. Job fairs may also feature presentations, seminars, workshops, and perhaps opportunities to meet one-on-one with employers, mentors, or coaches who can help with interview techniques, resume review, social media profiles, and other aspects of the transition.
The purpose of a job fair is to introduce and connect employers with job seekers who might be eligible for open positions within their company. Ideally every employer at a military-to-civilian job fair has open positions that a veteran could reasonably qualify to fill, has veterans manning their booth (or at least brings civilian team members who are versed on the military experience), and is interested in meeting applicants for their company. This is not always the case, however. Sometimes employers attend and exhibit at job fairs to âwave the flagâ and introduce the applicant job pool to their company and what they do. This can be a frustrating experience for those attending the job fair believing that every employer is ready to hire someone like them.
