I spent much of my twenties employed as a “strength coach”, and now my day job is to teach and research the science of strength and conditioning. Strength and conditioning coaches help people train to improve their physical performance and function and reduce their risk of injury. Strength and conditioning is a clinical profession like medicine, surgery or physiotherapy and is ostensibly “evidence-based” (we’ll talk about evidence and its application in depth in Chapter 12). Evidence in strength and conditioning coaching can come from the scientific literature, but the experience, tacit knowledge and wisdom of coaches is also an important source of evidence. The tension between these two sources of evidence is sometimes posed as the dichotomy between the art and the science of coaching.
