“WE’RE lost,” Melinda stated. “There is no denying it.”

She and Cassie sat on the hood of the Cadillac on a rural road, watching a dead cornfield being touched by the morning sun. They both wore jackets and confused expressions.

“Yes, dear,” Cassie said. “We’ve been lost for the past hour and a half. I was just driving around hoping to come across some sign. We should be close to that camp by now. If only there was a sign.”

“From God?”

“Or the highway system. Either would do. I’m not stingy with my prayers.”

“I offered to drive.”

“I appreciate that. I should have taken you up on your offer. The sleepier I get, the worse is my sense of direction. I need one of those GPS gadgets, but having someone barking commands at me while I drive would be distracting.”

“I don’t like the woman’s voice on those things. She’s a know-it-all.”

“That would be the point, wouldn’t it?”

They had stopped twice for coffee during the night, but neither of the stops was very long. Now, the coffees they had purchased were cold and bland, and they hadn’t had a real meal since leaving Jasper Lane.

A flock of geese flew overhead in a big V.

Cassie sighed. “I wish I knew where Jason was. I wish he would just call me.”

There was a note in her voice that Melinda recognized as desperation. She put an arm around Cassie. “We’ll find him.”

“I guess we should get going,” Cassie said, wiping a tear from her cheek. “There has to be a town up ahead. Maybe a gas station where we could find some directions. You can’t go too far in America without running right into somewhere else.”

“Maybe we could get directions to a nice hotel. You need to sleep, and I need a shower.”

“I don’t think I could sleep.”

“You’re going to try.”

Cassie looked at Melinda with a raised eyebrow. “Are you in control now?”

“I am. I’m the boss of you, at least until you get a clearer head. I don’t want to die in a car wreck because of your sleep deprivation.” She held out her hand. “Now, give me the keys.”

“They’re in the ignition.” Cassie got to her feet, and Melinda followed.

“Let’s get out of here,” Melinda said as the ladies got back into the Caddy. “These type of back road spots are rife with serial murderers and violent teenagers. I’ve seen movies about it.” She turned the ignition. “I’ve never met a murderer, and I don’t intend to start now.”

Cassie held her tongue. Again.
