Chapter 12
Felix was able to arrange for a car and driver to be at their disposal all day. As he closed the door after having tucked the women into the car, he said to the driver, âHave them back by six. We have reservations at the Grill at seven-thirty.â
The driver tipped his hat and got into the car. âWhere to first, ladies?â
âLetâs start from the skin out and hit makeup last. Rigby & Peller in Mayfair,â said Rachel, who was the only one of the three who actually liked shopping for clothes.
âOn Conduit Street?â asked the driver.
âThatâs the one.â
Once they arrived, Rachel hustled all three women into the store, where she was greeted by the manager like a long-lost friend. Although her clothes might have been frumpy in the past, her lingerie had always been decadent and risqué. They spent a little more than two hours picking up a whole new set of lingerie for Anne and several items each for Sage and Saoirse. The quality and quantity from which to choose seemed endless.
Anne was enjoying herself and finding that Rachel, like herself, loved to touch the delicate things, savoring their soft, silky feel. She was amazed at all of the choices and how each kind of bra, exhibited her bust in a different way. It did occur to her, however, that a corset did show off a womanâs figure to its best advantage.
They grabbed food from several street vendors for themselves and their driver and found a place they could eat in one of the parks. Anne selected a large, salted bow-like piece of bread called a pretzel. It was warm and squishy, and she loved the difference in textures. In addition, Sage had encouraged her to try a burritoâa kind of thin, flat bread filled with meat, cheese, rice and something call beans. Both were delicious.
âI was surprised that you didnât buy many panties. Iâm sure Gabe will appreciate that,â teased Sage.
âYou are terrible. But we did not⦠didnât generally wear any kind of garment down there unless your courses were upon you. Although, the ones I bought are so pretty and soft. Thatâs one thing I keep finding myself surprised byâhow very soft things are.â Anne looked around and lowered her voice. âWhat does one do about her courses?â
âYou have several options. We can go over them when we get to the flat unlessâ¦â
âI donât even know if I will have them here. I didnât in the Void. But then, I didnât feel pain or temperature or anything. When I first felt the sun on my face again, it was marvelous.â
âItâs interesting that you use the word âmarvelous.â Do you know that when they told your daughter she was queen, she quoted Psalm 118 and said it was âthe Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes.â I think if she knew where you were today, sheâd think that was marvelous as well.â
âI was so worried for her when that evil bitch, Mary, had her put in the Tower.
