Topstitch

YOU WILL NEED

•Glove (preferably fingerless)

•Nylon thread or 4 cord

•Bayonet needle

•Tailor’s chalk

•Regulator

The topstitch is essentially a repeat of the blind stitch, but with one difference. The needle is brought completely out of the top of the seat and returned, rather than stopping short of the top. Its purpose is to shape the top edge of the seat.

1Regulate the stuffing so that it is even along the front top edge of the seat. Wear a glove for this process, as it is really hard on the hands. As with the blind stitch, thread the needle and start with a slip knot on the seat facing.

2Move to the right by about 1in (2.5cm); you can mark this distance on the hessian with tailor’s chalk. Pass the needle through the hessian-covered stuffing with the eye closest to you. Bring the needle out of the top of the seat, move back to your first stitch, and return the needle back through the stuffing.

3Before the needle is all the way out, wrap the thread from the left-hand side three times around the needle. Pull the needle completely out.

4Pull the cord sharply to the right so that the knot is tight and the roll is starting to form. Be sure to regulate the stuffing so that your shape is even.
