Fifteen

Silfia and I rushed down the steps, taking two at a time.

"Suppose we should have swung down the tower," she said.

"We're probably ready for that now," I replied, "although it's pretty damn tall compared to the city walls."

As soon as I finished speaking, Silfia crashed into me, slamming my back into the wall as she hugged me.

"What's this for?" I asked, running my hands over the braids behind her pointy ears, feeling the soft jewel like braids over the long, straight, silky hair.

"You're giving me friends," she said, then touched a slender hand to my shoulder. "I will defend them with my life."

"I didn't give them to you." I took her hand, and we continued our descent down the stairs. "I just introduced them to you. It was you who spent that time with Dalphae. And you invited Dame Evie for a drink. She was extremely happy about it. Face it, you're great."

"When you say it, I believe it." Her slightly pointed nose twitched as she grinned and kissed me.
