The World Takes Notice
The same year the Goldberg Variations record was released, Glenn played for the first time with an American orchestra, the Detroit Symphony.
In 1982, twenty-five years after he first recorded the Goldberg Variations, Glenn made a new version of this music. It too became a best-selling album. Many people prefer the earlier version because the tempo was faster, and the playing seemed more daring. The later version is slower, and according to others, more reflective, more mature. Both versions are still available on CD today.
He completed the recording in one week. The results were wonderful. Glennâs unique musicianship and his stunning technical mastery of the keyboard came through in every bar.
The record sold more copies than any other classical record in 1956. It remained in print even after Glenn recorded a new version much later. Glennâs interpretation of the Goldberg Variations brought him instant fame. This recording, together with the coming concert tour, would change his life dramatically.
