(1) Hospital characteristics tend to have greater impact than patient characteristics on patient outcomes, therefore focusing on system characteristics (people, processes, tools, etc.) as leverage points is promising.

(2) Early recognition of patient deterioration is a key system leverage point because complete prevention of complications that lead to FTR events is not likely and response interventions, such as rapid response teams, have improved but not eliminated events, most likely due to activations occurring too late in the deterioration process.
