Chapter 13
They wound up at a firing range. Not exactly what David had in mind when he offered to apologize.
That said, he shouldn’t have been too surprised to find out it was one of the things Ricky did to blow off steam, and curiosity got the better of him. What David had been expecting to be more of an open area turned out to be an understated stone building outside of town, painted mint green and manned by an older gentleman with a thick mustache and an even thicker drawl. Must've been transplanted from way further south, because even David had trouble understanding him. Ricky, of course, seemed to understand fine.
David was loaded up with earplugs, safety goggles, ammo, and a rental revolver that Ricky suggested might make for more comfortable shooting. Ultimately the answer was no, but it was a helluva lot easier to load. Loading Ricky's gun gave David a thumb blister.
He hated to admit though, it was kinda cool to shoot the thing. Not that he’d run right out and buy his own.
“Check you out.” Ricky slapped a button that pulled the target closer on a little motorized track from the back of the shooting lane. “You're a natural.”
Sure enough, most of the shots were grouped tightly on the paper man's torso. David's pulse rushed from the effort, and his hands buzzed strangely from keeping the gun firm in his grip. “Guess so, yeah.”
“Well, 'cept that one shot that went wild.” Ricky pointed to a stray hole on the edge of the paper. “But that hardly counts.”
“Shouldn't,” David grumbled. “You were distracting me.”
“I was helping you aim.”
“You were pushing your crotch into my ass.”
Ricky's eyes blazed as he leaned back against the wall of the lane and planted one booted foot between David's. This was interesting, considering their post-sex argument had left a peaceful but awkward sort of tiptoeing around each other.
“So,” Ricky said. “You finally ready to call it a day and grab some dinner?” After a quick glance to ensure privacy, he gave a quick tug on David's belt loop.
Could have been the adrenaline from shooting. Could have been simply being around Ricky. Or both. Their fight from before faded to a distant, fuzzy memory. “Fuck yeah, I'm ready.” His stomach growled while Ricky put away his weapon. “I'm starving.”
“Don't know why you didn't eat on the way.”
David scratched the back of his neck. “Yeah, I wasn’t hungry enough then.”
Ricky nodded and finished gathering their stuff.
David jammed his hands in his pockets and said a silent word of thanks that Ricky seemed to accept his explanation. Earlier, the idea of Ricky being pissed at him had taken David's appetite, which meant something David didn't especially want to think about.
David hadn't connected with many people in his life. With his family, he'd tried, but it had been a fail on all fronts. That had partly been his own fear, but failure was failure all the same. There'd been Olivia, and the weeks during which they'd stopped
