* * *

During my yoga workout in Gym the next morning, I overheard my brother talking to Sid.

“Band gets all of Wednesday?” Crow chuckled. “That’s new.”

“You get used to it,” Sid said. “We changed it because of the exchange students.”

“Who knew so many at Messing played instruments?” Crow shrugged. “Anyway, it looks like a lot of setup.”

“It is.” Sid nodded. “That’s why I normally start at the Lecture bell.”

“Your planner says we’re starting at Forum, though.”

“Thanks to you.” Sid grinned. “Last semester, I had to come here at five in the morning to get the bathroom paper restocked with reserves in place. Today, we do that during Lecture.”

“Cool.”

My brother nodded like this was no big deal. I could tell all the praise lit him up by the improvement in his posture. Helping looked as good on him here in the mundane as it had in the Under.

At Mediumship, I overheard Gia talking to Peg.

“We’ve got to stonewall Rita,” Peg said. “She’s in Donna’s business way too much.”

“Seriously?” Gia blinked. “Just tell her the truth already. Hawthorn kids are behind the times. It’s yesterday’s news over here.”

“I would if she’d lay off.” Peg sighed. “But I’m not sure she will.”

“What’s this about?” I tapped my foot.

“None of your business.” Peg crossed her arms.

“Maybe I want to help.”

“I’d believe in unicorns before that.” Peg snorted. “You, helping Donna. Don’t make me laugh.”

“Rita’s dating my best friend. Is it so hard to imagine I don’t want him stuck in the middle of a feud between those two?”

“She has a point.” Gia elbowed Peg. “Also, Mavis is practically psychic like us. It’s okay to tell her ancient history.”

“Fine.” Peg rolled her eyes. “Rita found out Donna asked Ed to Yule Ball. She’s been pestering Donna about it since February. Thinks Ed’s cheating.”

“Whoa.” I took a step back. “That’s off the wall.”

“Exactly what I said,” Peg said. “And the one piece of information I have to prove her wrong is a big secret. So Rita doesn’t believe me.”

“Maybe she will if she hears it from me,” I said. “Donna would be hanging at the boarding house if she and Ed were a thing. I’ll take care of it later today.”

The bell rang, and we had to take our quizzes. It’d have to wait until lunch. This ended up being a good thing because I had time to get a little entertainment wrestling gossip from Fiona and Jill.

I hurried to the portal circle after Forum, managing to get there before any of our guests from the other schools. Hawthorn arrived first.

As soon as Rita stepped through, she peered around as though looking for someone. Ed probably, though he hadn’t arrived. I walked up to her.

“Hey, Rita.”

“Oh, hi Mavis.”

“Can you help me grab us a table for lunch?”

“I guess so.”

Rita came but kept on sighing the whole way to the cafeteria. I sat at an empty table and patted the table in front of me. She sat.

“I guess Messing isn’t here yet.” She rolled her eyes. “It figures.
