THE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE FSA

The term ‘Free Syrian Army’ (al-Jaysh al-Hurr) served as a rallying point for local armed factions, those whose political ambitions were articulated within the Syrian national context, or those connected to and funded by the opposition’s Supreme Military Command (SMC) and the Syrian National Coalition (SNC). Daesh took advantage of the fragmentation of the FSA’s various constituent forces to wipe them out and appropriate their resources (weapons and otherwise). To do so, it adopted a multi-stage and multi-faceted strategy, working insofar as was possible to neutralize the armed factions and the various local courts that had emerged in liberated areas so as to force them to turn a blind eye to Daesh expansion.
