3. October

Brother Theodor explained to him: “What you heard in that omen wasn’t a choir, it was polyphony. A Te Deum or a Domine.” Vincent is again perched on the wall, leaning on his palms and staring across the black water, to the other bank of Humber. He senses a shadow moving along the wall, walking through the night’s fabric.

The man groans, and keeps his eyes to the water and the forest on the other bank, flooded with lights. Little stars float through the trees’ branches.

A cold palm touches his forehead, cooling him. The night sky fades into gray day, and he opens his eyes and sees Theodor wiping his forehead. The melodic chants, intertwined like the braids of an old virgin, are still licking his room’s walls. He’s lying on his bed, covered by a rough brown blanket.

Vincent touches the silver chain at his neck, seeking his talisman with his fingers. He searches twice the whole length of the chain, then rises on his elbow.

The man vaguely remembers the exorcism last night. He endured everything as calmly as possible; the monks fought more than he. Theodor stayed with him, kneeling and praying to God for Vincent’s soul. At one point, Vincent collapsed. He must have lost his talisman then.

“My golden tooth,” Vincent speaks hoarsely. “The tooth from my necklace.”

“You’re clean, Vincent. You’re not and never have been possessed.”

“Then what was all that about last night?”

“Although there is no actual possession, something’s happening to you.”

The man rises to sit on the bed’s edge, defeating Theodor’s easygoing opposition. Vincent’s belly has deflated and there are two bloody cracks in the skin, stretching from his navel to his hips. His chest is clotted with sweat, and the necklace hangs empty. “So, do I understand that you have no idea what’s happening to me?”

Theodor looks disappointed.

“And all these wounds, and the womanly periods?”

“Maybe you should see a doctor.”

“None of the brothers have seen my golden tooth?”

“One of them noticed it was missing and has looked for it—in vain. But I got an idea where you could ask for it.”
