Analyzing the Motivations of the Opponent
While analyzing an opponentâs capability reveals its range of available options, it tells us little about how the opponent is likely to prioritize those options and choose among them. An analysis of an opponentâs motivation and interests will help narrow down what its preferences and choices might be.
There are several steps involved in analyzing the motivation of an opponent. The first is to infer what the opponentâs interests are. The second step is to determine whether the opponent is motivated mostly by threat or opportunity with regard to those. The third step is to ascertain the opponentâs tolerance for risk and uncertainty.
