David Whiteman was born in Fort Worth, Texas. He has a BA in English from the University of Texas at Arlington. While seeking a teaching career he has pursued fiction writing as a member of the Dallas-Ft. Worth Writers’ Workshop. He is an avid fan of horror movies, heavy metal, and a comic book collector.

Joe Mata drove the animal control truck down the bumpy side-street that dead-ended at the city animal shelter. The shocks creaked along with every pothole. The busted radio broadcast the static-filled classic rock station, the only diversion from the squealing, whining animals in the containment units. The truck stopped at the locked gate surrounded by a chain-link fence with barbed-wire on top. Joe fumbled with his keys to unlock the chain as he stepped out of the truck. He pulled up his sagging pants up to his beer-belly and grumbled as he made his way to the gate. You’d think they’d at least have an electric gate but the animal shelter budget was limited. He pulled the gate open, then walked back to the truck. A mutt in the back barked. Joe slammed his fist on the metal door.
