‘In my mind I keep hearing Lloyd calling for Jean.’ Brooke placed a plate of toast on the table. ‘I’m going to look for some photos for him this morning.’

‘Don’t you think it’ll be too dangerous to go inside that house?’

‘I’m hoping nothing much has changed overnight. If there’s more damage I’ll rethink the idea, but at the moment I’m going in.’ She’d be careful—and fast. She knew where there’d likely be some framed pictures. ‘It’ll be a snatch and grab.’

Danny said, ‘I’m not missing out on the raid.’ He wasn’t smiling or laughing; he was serious. He was that kind of guy.

He hadn’t baulked about helping her yesterday and, apart from querying the safety factor, he hadn’t now. In her mind that made him a keeper. First tick to becoming one anyway. ‘Thanks,’ she said. ‘But only if you’re not going to mess with that knee.’

‘The knee’s good.’

‘So that wasn’t a groan of pain when you got out of bed?’

‘You would prefer me to be a wimp?’ he asked with a little smile tipping those erotic lips upward.

‘Nothing wimpy about you so far.’ Danny had been hard as rock when they’d made love during the night. A generous lover, he gave more than he took, making certain she was ready and willing. Except he’d have had to be deaf, blind and dumb not to know when she was ready, all but begging for release.

‘Are you going to start clearing your backyard today?’

Blowing on her coffee, she watched as he slathered butter on his toast, remembering those fingers on her body. She blew harder on the coffee. ‘Maybe.’

His head came up and he locked his gaze on her. ‘Maybe?’

Her cheeks heated. ‘We’ll see.’

We might have better things to do.

When Brooke went outside she heard a digger working on the road. ‘Sounds like the road might be open later today,’ she called to Danny.

‘I’m quite happy being stuck here for another day.’

‘You’re due at the ED tomorrow afternoon.’

‘I’ve got a good excuse not to be. I don’t usually try to get out of turning up for work. It’s only that I’m so relaxed I don’t want to leave.’

She knew what he meant. For her, it wouldn’t be quite the same when he did head away. ‘Do you think you’ll be able to drive with your bung knee?’

‘It’s improving all the time, and tomorrow’s a while away. I’ll see how it is then.’

‘I can drive you to Nelson if need be.’ A three-hour round trip wouldn’t be a problem, especially spending half of it with Danny.

‘Thanks for the offer, but hopefully I’ll be fine because I’ll need my car. It’s also got all my worldly goods in the back. As in clothes, books and laptop.’

Which would be easy enough to transfer to her car, but Danny seemed determined to drive himself. She doubted he’d do it if his knee wasn’t up to it, though he might not be insured if he had an accident. His fault or not.

‘Insurance?’

He looked away. ‘I can cover it.
