In the late 1950s, the much-quoted Lord Lindsay was growing concerned about the wisdom of linking trade with China recognition. He believed that if the communists wanted to trade they would do so whether China was recognised or not. He warned Australia against recognising China just ‘for the sake of securing trade’ as this could well lead to political blackmail. As he spelt out in his book China and the Cold War (1955), Lindsay had become increasingly concerned about the ‘good faith and good sense’ of the Chinese communist leaders.
