Chapter 6

When Brandt returns to working on his fishing pole, he braids several strands of thread together tying one end to a long sturdy stick and the other through the eyes of two needles. With great precision, he bends the needles to create hooks.

“If the thread is strong enough, this should do the trick,” he says. “I’m gonna give this baby a try.”

I’m skimming through Moby Dick, just trying to kill time. I remember having to read this book in high school, but I think I gave up after the first chapter. Never had much interest in stories about the sea—ironic now that I’m living one. I glance up from the book to watch Brandt, in all his bare-chested glory, walk out into the water.

“Don’t you need bait?” I call out to him.

“I’ll try it naked first!” He looks over his shoulder and gives me a mischievous smile.

I return to my book, though I must admit I enjoy watching Brandt more, especially without his shirt on. I can’t let him suspect that I have a little crush on him, even if he did call me beautiful. After all, stranded or not, I’m still engaged to Jordan—at least as far as he knows. Oh, how I wish I would’ve woken him out his heavy slumber and just blurted out that it was over. Then this guilt over even looking at another man wouldn’t be eating away at me so much. I’ve been cheated on before, I know how much it hurts, and as sick as I am of Jordan, I still wouldn’t want wear the label of a cheater.

“Whoa!” Brandt shouts, and I look up again. “I got one!”

He tugs at the makeshift fishing pole and a small fish dangles off the hook, wiggling its tail fin.

“Throw it back!” I shout. “We just ate!”

Even at a distance, I can see Brandt furrow his brow at me. He looks down at the flailing fish, unhooks it, and tosses it back into the water. He then wades back out of the ocean and returns to me. He tosses the fishing pole into the sand, plopping down next to it.

“Are you mad at me?” I ask.

He looks out at the crashing waves, instead of looking at me. “It took me a good amount of time to make that fishing pole. Every catch is gonna weaken it.”

I roll my eyes. “Sorry. I didn’t tell you to test it.”

“That’s not the point. We’ve gotta work together, be on the same page, if we’re gonna make it through. If you were gonna tell me to throw back the fish, you should’ve told me to wait on testing it, if that’s how you felt about it. Personally, I can’t believe it actually worked, but now one fish—one food source—has been wasted. Food and water are precious, Sarina.”

“Geez, fine. I said I was sorry. You didn’t have to throw it back just cause I said so anyway. If you wanna eat raw fish of unknown origin, be my guest.
