Always seize the opportunity.

That was something Hugo had learned as a soldier. You never knew where the next meal would come from or when you’d get your next chance to sleep, so you should always take those chances when you get them.

He’d fallen asleep almost as soon as the wheels had left the ground, and even though the flight would only take an hour and a quarter, those few minutes were everything.

He felt a hand on his shoulder and turned.

“Hugo?” Freya said.

He opened his eyes and saw Freya's face. "What’s up?"

Freya knit her eyebrows and said, "Sorry to wake you. I need your help."

He stretched and sat up, running his hand over his face. "Sure."

Freya shook her head and said, “This might not be the best time, but I need your help with something I've been thinking about for a while.”

"What?"

Freya bit her lip, and Hugo watched her struggle with what she had to say.

Finally, Freya told him, "I'm thinking about having a baby."

Hugo looked at her calmly. “Oh? All right.”

She winced and cocked her head. “Is that all you have to say?”

He smiled and asked, “What do you want me to say?"

Freya shrugged and lashed out with her hands. "I don’t know. Something like . . . it doesn't suit me, or that it’s too risky to have children in our profession. Anything along those lines."

Hugo shifted and scratched his cheek. "You know I can't say that. I have Elektra, and she’s the best thing that happened to me. And Lita, too, of course, but it doesn't compare to the love I have for Elektra. She fills me with so much joy that sometimes I don't know what to do with myself. So, I can only say I think you should go for it.”

Freya nodded slowly. “I figured you’d say something like that. I know what you, Lita, and Elektra have, and I've been thinking about it more and more lately. I'm just not sure what it would mean for Novus and me.”

“Don't worry about that,” Hugo said. “Whatever happens, you always have a place at Novus. When Lita and I had Elektra, Madeleine was so helpful."

“So, you're not annoyed?”

Hugo frowned. "Annoyed? Why would I be annoyed?”

Freya bit her lip and said, "I don’t know. Because if I get pregnant, I can't go out with the team on missions."

Hugo chuckled, "No, but if you get pregnant, we’ll fix up a desk job for you until you’re ready to go out on missions again. You know our team means everything to me, and if I had the choice, we’d go on like this forever. But things change—it’s a natural part of life. The secret is not to fight against it but find the natural rhythm.”

They sat in silence for a while with their thoughts. Finally, Freya leaned over and gave Hugo a quick hug. "Thank you for listening,” she told him.

Hugo hugged her back. "Of course."

The aircraft dipped slightly, and a voice came over the speakers, “This is your captain speaking.
