Lennox
I relax in the backseat, safely concealed inside the heavily tinted windows, as Nathan navigates through LA traffic to get back to my place.
âIs anyone expecting you anywhere tonight?â he asks, parking in my private driveway.
âNo,â I say softly. âI asked Jen to clear everything. Sheâs heading back to her apartment downtown for the night. Sheâll be back over tomorrow to get ready for the premiere.â
Nate hops out of the car and opens the back door for me as I unbuckle my seatbelt and grab my bag. âIs that smart? Attending the premiere after this, and with dickhead still on the loose?â
The floodlights on the house turned on the second we neared the house. Nathanâs concerned face is highlighted by the bright lights. âI wonât let him take this night from me. I wonât do it, Nate.â
âIâm just sayingââ
âWell, donât.â I turn away and stalk toward the house, suddenly and inexplicably angry. âYouâre not the only professional.â
âWhat does that mean?â
Inside, the house is completely empty. Rose came that morning to prepare food for the next few days and tidy up, then took the rest of the day to visit her daughter and granddaughter. I grab a bottle of red wine from the mounted rack on the wall and yank open a drawer, searching for a corkscrew. I donât know why Iâm so angry all of a sudden.
Nathan comes to the island and stands across from me. He braces his palms on the marble surface. âWhat,â he repeats, âis that supposed to mean?â
I feel my mouth tighten as I try to keep sudden, violent tears from exploding out of me. I donât answer him until Iâve poured a generous mouthful of wine into a glass and knocked it back.
âIt means that youâve made it very clear the only reason youâre here is for the job.â I pour another mouthful. Why am I bothering with a glass?
He draws his head back. âYes. You hired me, Lennox. You paid a fee to our firm like everyone else who hires us. What is there to be pissed off about?â
It takes everything in me not to throw the glass. âIâm pissed off that youâre acting like you feel nothing!â I cry. âThat all those years in the past are justâ¦all those years in the past.â
An impassive mask drops over his features. âWhat should they be, if not just that?â
Hot tears spring to my eyes. âYouâre a cold-hearted bastard, you know that?â
âMe? Iâm the cold-hearted bastard?â He steps around the island to my side. âLennox, do you hear yourself? If memory serves correctly, you were the one who left me. You were the one who decided her dreams had no room for love too. You turned your back on me and all those years because something better came along.â
âThis was my dream!â I yell back. âMy dream, Nathan. Youâre the one who made it a dream-versus-you thing. It didnât have to be that way!â
âOh, so this is my fault now?â He crosses his arms. âItâs not like you ever came back.
