“There she is.” Hank raised a glass of whiskey as I walked up to the corner booth where he sat with Cristian and Bianca, drinking.

“Finally, Dred, where’ve you been?” Bianca asked.

“I didn’t know there was a party tonight,” I said. “Otherwise I would’ve gotten here earlier.”

I slid into the booth next to Bianca and gave her a quick one-armed hug. “Thanks for saving me a place.”

“I fended off a couple hot mountain lion shifters just so you could sit there,” Bianca said.

“They were just OK, Dred, don’t listen to her tall tales,” Hank said.

“They were pretty sexy, actually,” Cristian protested. “Not as put together as yours truly. But still.”

“Straight, too,” Bianca laughed, and leaned across the table toward him. “Unlike yours truly.”

“What’ll it be, Dred?” Thrice asked, appearing beside me.

I jumped slightly and glanced up at the fae server. He balanced an empty tray against his leg like he’d just dropped off some drinks. His black-streaked blond hair was looking rather sleek and his colorful tattoos glimmered in the accent lighting over our booth.

“Fire and bullets,” I said, grinning at him.

His perfect brow furrowed and he sighed impatiently. “What’s that, again?”

“Come on. You remember.”

“Something disgusting, that’s what I remember.”

I caught the sound of Hank chuckling and felt my cheeks fire up. “Three jalapeño stuffed olives on a toothpick in whiskey on the rocks.”

“Barf. OK, what kind of whiskey?”

I’d already tried Jack Daniels and Wild Turkey and felt both were too sweet. Time to try another whiskey. “Jameson.”

“Black?”

“Just the standard. If it doesn’t take off, I’ll get black next time.”

“I don’t care, as long as you tip well,” Thrice said, with a pointed look. “Anyone else need a refill?”

“Just the tip!” Cristian said, lifting his glass.

Hank laughed and raised his. “That’s what she said!”

Thrice’s gaze met mine and he winked. “They’ve been tipping well.”

“I’ll sober them up.”

“Don’t you dare.” Thrice spun on his heel and stalked off.

“Dred, your drink is disgusting,” Hank said.

“Have you tried it? No? Didn’t think so. Jury’s out, Hank. I’ll let you have a sip.”

“Sounds like a sexy good time.”

“You wish.”

“What’ve you been up to all day?” His speech was really slurred. I couldn’t wait to join him and hear my own voice slurring consonants.

I jumped right into things. “Grygg is missing. I think we need to start taking the disappearance of earth elementals even more serious.”

Cristian undid the top buttons of his dress shirt, groaned, and leaned into the back of the booth. “Can we not talk about work?”

“Here, here,” Hank said, lifting his glass.

“Is that a good idea? We need to be alert, always,” I said.

“They’re right, though, Dred. You need to cut loose sometimes and just have a good time.”

“Yeah, Dred, we’re right. You know? We all take work seriously, but it’s work and we need to blow off steam right now. Not talk more about work and discuss things we have no control over.”

I held up one finger. “It’s not that I don’t agree with you, but we can’t let our guard down right now, guys.
