The warmth in the patrol car removed the chill of the North Dakota wind as Toby watched his co-worker depart. He radioed dispatch, “Car 1311 back in service.”

“Dispatch 10-4.”

He sat and enjoyed a minute of quiet solitude as he finished his coffee. Something moved in the distance, but the snow that blanketed the landscape and whipped by its winds reduced the trooper’s visibility to a hundred yards. The policeman grabbed for his binoculars in their protective case and checked the horizon for a better view.

The wolf stared back at him and caused the hairs to stand up on the back of his neck. He turned the car heater up to maximum to take away the twin chill.

The trooper looked at the mileage sign outside his passenger side window, then at the desolate stretch of highway in front of his car. He thought about Agent Treehorn and the wolf. Were they guiding him? He shook his head at his absurd thoughts. I’ll turn around at the woman’s body dump location and prove them both wrong.
