When Maverick told me that his whole family knows, strangely, it wasnât overwhelming. I figure a pregnancy is pretty difficult to hide, and Iâm not much of a secret keeper myself. Most of the time Iâm more guilty of telling too much. So I couldnât be angry with him. In fact, I find it difficult to think of ever being angry with him. Maverick is far too sweet. We lay on the couch together, and it feels so nice, just cuddling. Itâs so strange to think about how different our relationship is now. It used to be that he wasnât even one foot in front of me, and we were ravaging each other. No tenderness. No closeness. It was all physical.
Now, itâs like all the sexual tension is gone, and whatâs left isâ¦this. Weâre watching a comedy together, and chuckling at the same time, while Maverickâs arm is around me, and heâs sliding his palm up and down my back, soothing me almost into a meditative state. âSo, how come you had a change of clothes in your truck?â I ask him.
âWell, I figure it could go either way, you know, when I told you about the cat being out of the bag and all. I like to be prepared for things, on both sides. I figure at least if Iâve got clothes with me, but I donât bring them in, Iâm not being too presumptuous.â He pauses. âBesides, I always have a change of clothes with me. Working around horses all the time, it becomes practice. Yâall are going to get dirty no matter which way you slice it.â
I feel a wave a nausea hit, so I run to the washroom. Maverick is right behind me. It seems that my morning sickness is coming at night. He holds my hair back, while I puke up all the Chinese food I had earlier with Denice. Like, every drop. Hell, I think I see a boot in there, so much comes out. It doesnât faze Maverick at all. Heâs got the washcloth at the ready, and he uses soothing words and tones, and Iâm so weak once Iâm finished, he picks me up off the floor and carries me to bed.
As we lay there together, I donât know which one of us is more tired. âYou look worse than me, Maverick.â I comment, voice cracking from being sick.
âItâs been a long week, darlinâ.â He says, combing his fingers through the hair at the side of my head. I feel so awful. Heâs doing triple-duty, looking after the ranch and looking after me. Plus, looking after Gunner, too. âYâall donât need to worry about a thing, though, love. Ainât nothing I canât handle.â He says, eyes heavy.
He finally gives in and closes his eyes. His finger is still stroking the back of my neck, like itâs instinctual. And when it finally stops moving, and his breathing becomes shallow, I stare at him in the moonlight. Heâs naked from the waist up, opting to leave his pants on.
