When Cade strolled into the Elite Security office building, he was braced for any type of reaction. In all the time he had been working for them, he had never actually gone to the offices. He had only met Roger in person once, though they regularly communicated through phone, email, and the occasional video call. He had never met the others on staff.

Roger had started the security firm after he had retired from the military five years before. He recruited primarily former Army servicemen, though there was the occasional Marine thrown in for a little variety. From what Roger had told him, there were currently ten full-time consultants and six part-time consultants like Cade, as well as a full support staff of admins and IT assistance. They had made quite the name for themselves in their city, as well as around the state.

Even the person sitting at the front desk had the air of ex-military about them. Most likely more of a guard than a receptionist. They sat behind a large desk with a bulletproof shield blocking them from the rest of the lobby. There were cameras everywhere, and in order to get through to the offices you had to be buzzed in. It was logical for a security firm to have top security, and Cade was suitably impressed. He assumed it impressed a lot of clients into giving them their business as well.

“May I help you?” greeted the guard at the front desk, eying Cade suspiciously.

“I am here to speak with Roger Steele.”

“Your name, please?”

“Cade Lawson.”

“ID?”

Cade took out his driver’s license and slid it underneath the window. The guard scrutinized it closely, comparing it to Cade’s appearance. He had no beard in the photo and shorter hair, so the scrutiny was warranted.

“Do you have an appointment?”

“No.” Cade paused. “I’m pretty sure he’ll see me, though.”

Skeptically, the guard lifted a radio on the desk and pressed the talk button. “Mr. Steele, sir? You have a Cade Lawson here at the front to see you.”

There was silence on the other end. The guard frowned, staring at the receiver. He was about to speak again when Cade interrupted, “He heard you.”

His frown deepening, the guard was still about to ring again when the closed door to the left opened and Roger Steele himself stood there.

“Well, as I live and breathe!” he exclaimed. His eyes were wide in shock. “Cade Lawson! What brings you over here?”

Covering his shock with a polite smile, the guard passed Cade’s driver’s license back through the window. Cade grabbed it and pocketed it before striding over to meet Roger.

Cade reached out his hand to accept Roger’s. “I’m here on business. You have a minute?”

“For you? I have an hour. Come on in.” Ushering him inside, Roger gestured for him to follow down the hall. On the way, Roger pointed out a community space, private offices, and a large conference room. There were several people working – some sitting behind computers doing research, some consulting in small groups. There
