The early church used several names for this special meal. Paul called it the “Lord’s table” (1 Corinthians 10:21) or the “Lord’s Supper” (11:20); and uses the expression koinonia for the cup and bread (10:16). Koinonia became communio in Latin, which became communion in English. So, koinonia in the New Testament referred both to Christian fellowship and the Lord’s Supper. 26 This combination is important to remember: the act of breaking bread together in table fellowship was both worship and a community ethic, as evidenced in Acts 2:42, 46; 20:7, 11; and 27:35.
