Q It’s been three weeks since our surrogate was inseminated—by now that home pregnancy test could be changing colors—and we haven’t heard from her. We’re going crazy! May I call her?

A Your anxiety is understandable, but calling might seem intrusive. If you used an agency, call your contact there instead of the surrogate and ask whether there’s any news.

If your relationship is directly with the woman, sit tight for a few more days. When you do call, be sure to phrase your inquiry as one about her. Don’t just ask, “Did it take?” She’ll know why you’re calling, and she’ll probably tell you what she knows, or when she expects to do a pregnancy test. But don’t hang up without specifically arranging your next contact—will she call when she knows, or can you call again on Saturday? That way there’s no pacing back and forth, at least not until you’re headed for the delivery room.
