Chapter 10
At seven a.m., I was released from institutionalized Greene County jail. I was like Alice in Wonderland as I walked through the initial processing area. I could see Sammie, Charlotte and Malone: but everything was small and weird. By the way they were standing and shifting their feet, I could tell they were worried. All three had their arms crossed. Sammie was standing next to Malone. I squinted to see the distance between them.
Charlotte had on her red running outfit. Speculating, I’m sure, that we’d get me back to my house and she could run on the trails beside the farm next to me.
The walk through the looking glass was a long one, and I rotated my fingers around the ring I had received back from my jailers. Carleen was out of sight and Janeen and Tasha were still in the cell with the etched engravings that would be there till they tore the jailhouse down. My dully beating heart felt tired
and my energy was low but it was sure good to lay my eyes on what seemed like Charlie’s dyke-angels standing before me.
“Hey, you okay?” Malone asked, and then put her arms around me.
Sammie sidled beside me. “You look like shit. Any cute girls in there?” She popped me on the shoulder.
“Two really cute ones,” I responded, releasing Malone and darting a look into her eyes before quickly reaching for Charlotte.
Charlotte hugged me and said, “What did you blow?”
“Point one O,” I said. “It’s good to see you.” Sammie slapped me on the back. “Well, how did you spend your first visit to jail?”
“Hopeful that it is my last.” I slapped her on the back. “Let’s go!”Outside the jail, we all piled into Malone’s rainbow-stickered Subaru to travel the forty miles back to Charlottesville. Bed. I just wanted a bed. And, then I did what I thought I wouldn’t do.
The burn in my eyes welled up and tears pooled in the corners so I thought they might spatter the window if I blinked too hard.
I was up front with Malone and Sammie and Charlotte drilled me with questions. Malone rolled through the parking lot around police cars and front-end loaders and deputy sheriffs coming in to relieve the night shift. Two oversized female deputy sheriffs chatted beside a tree near the complex of buildings and two inmates in martensite chains were being escorted by another deputy through the front doors we just came from.
Charlotte put her hand on my shoulder. “Well, Carrie, we’ll get you home and you can get something to eat and then if you want, you can go for a run with me. Sweat out some of the jailhouse rock.” She muffed my hair.
“Why don’t you meet me at Ray’s later after I do my run to Richmond, I’ll be your DD and you can tell me all about it.” Sammie hit my shoulder and a tear fell from my right eye. I wiped it with my shirt.
“How’s Fortunata been since the incident?” I asked Malone,
ignoring Sammie and her request.
