Selectively prioritizing future-benders
Future-benders in the contemporary world are a mixed lot. They include thinkers and authors, celebrities, mass-media moguls, the very rich, corporate executives, scientists and inventors, entrepreneurs, social actors, Twitterers and bloggers, scholars, politicians, military commanders, spiritual leaders and more. Even a lonely actor can make a difference, such as by assassinating an important ruler, writing a transformative book or initiating a scientific revolution. In some situations a crowd too can bend the future.
In principle, this diversity is advantageous. It often increases creativity, serves as a safeguard against tyranny and provides opportunities for self-fulfillment. But it also easily impacts for the worse. Business seeks profits up to becoming greedy; scientists do produce dangerous knowledge; mass media stars and Internet misusers do stupefy the public; politicians often care most about staying in power; and so on. Therefore, as well as for legitimation and proficiency, selective prioritizing of steering captains, navigators and helmspersons is necessary. At the top of the list are political leaders, willing and qualified, or usually unwillingly and grossly underqualified.
