The Sunrise Hospital was built to the northeast of the Las Vegas Strip and, in the early evening, the traffic had made it harder for Marlowe, Brad, and Roxanne to get through. However, Brad had shown that this wasn’t his first time in Vegas, and using the back streets and alleyways, they had got through in under ten minutes.

There were ambulances out front as they arrived. Marlowe still didn’t understand how ambulances worked in America. In the UK, you had the National Health Service, so if an ambulance arrived, you knew it would take you to the hospital. But in America, ambulance firms competed against each other for jobs.

Each ambulance he could see out the front looked different, with different markings and logos.

There was no way to decide which one could be the ambulance that Roxanne’s contact had informed her about.

Roxanne was already running into the main ER, looking around frantically.

‘Lexi Warner,’ she shouted out. ‘Does anybody know where Lexi Warner is?’

Nobody really paid her attention, so Marlowe upped it, holding up his Marshal’s badge.

‘US Marshals,’ he shouted. ‘Where’s Lexi Warner?’

At this, there was more interest. And one of the scrub nurses, running across to them, pointed down a side corridor.

‘Two paramedics just took her that way,’ she said. ‘They were supposed to be coming out the front, but one nurse on duty had stopped them, said they needed to wait a moment. There was a bit of a tussle, and—’

‘They’re going for the back entrance,’ Brad interrupted. ‘They know we’re after them.’

‘Thank you,’ Marlowe replied to the scrub nurse. ‘If you see them coming back this way, pull the fire alarm.’

‘I can’t—’

Marlowe leant close.

‘Pull the fire alarm.’

‘I’ll do it,’ Roxanne took the car keys from Brad. ‘Get Lexi. I’ll meet you back at the hotel.’

Marlowe nodded and, as Roxanne continued speaking to the nurses, he started running down the corridor with Brad, scanning the rooms as they passed. There was every possibility that the two men who were with Lexi Warner, the so-called paramedics, had realised they were rumbled and were looking for a place to lie low. This could turn into a hostage negotiation situation.

Marlowe was hoping it wouldn’t. It would be a lot quicker, and a lot easier if they just found and stopped them.

‘No bodies,’ he shouted to Brad. ‘Unless we have to.’

‘You always kill my fun,’ Brad muttered. Marlowe wasn’t sure if he was joking or not.

‘We’re in a hospital,’ Marlowe replied. ‘We don’t want this public. Remember, we’re trying to take Gabriel and Orchid down quietly, not in the news.’

‘Marlowe, everything you do ends up in the news,’ Brad smiled. ‘It’s one of the reasons I tolerate you.’

‘Tolerate? That’s high praise,’ Marlowe chuckled as they turned, running further into the bowels of the hospital. There was a clatter ahead of them, around the corner to the right. The sound as if, for example, a gurney had been run into a wall.

Marlowe raised his gun, turned the corner, and then ducked back as rounds spanged around him.
