In May 2007 Wake County Superior Court Judge Paul Ridgeway ruled that "to require pious and faithful practitioners of religions other than Christianity to swear oaths in a form other than the form most meaningful to them would thwart the search for the truth. It would elevate form over substance." He allowed the Qur'an, the Hebrew Bible, and the Bhagavad Gita to be used to swear in witnesses.so

That sounds noble and high-minded. Many praised it as both common sense and a manifestation of genuine American pluralism. After all, doesn't it make more sense for someone to swear to tell the truth on a book he values as holy, rather than one he does not?

This question briefly took the national stage when the first Muslim congressman, Keith Ellison (D-MN), was photographed in January 2007 being sworn in by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thomas Jefferson's copy of the Qur'an, borrowed from the National Archives for the occasion. This was just a ceremonial photo op-in fact, representatives are sworn in en masse, without any book at all.51

However, the symbolic value was enormous. Talk show host Dennis Prager said that Ellison should not be allowed to be sworn in, even ceremoniously, on the Qur'an-"not because of any American hostility to the Koran, but because the act undermines American civilization."

Why? Because to be sworn in on the Qur'an would be "an act of hubris that perfectly exemplifies multiculturalist activism-my culture trumps America's culture. What Ellison and his Muslim and leftist supporters are saying is that it is of no consequence what America holds as its holiest book; all that matters is what any individual holds to be his holiest book." On the contrary, said Prager, "insofar as a member of Congress taking an oath to serve America and uphold its values is concerned, America is interested in only one book, the Bible. "12
