Thirty-Eight
In 1967, Isherwood wrote a short book called A Meeting by the River. It’s the story of two brothers, Patrick and Oliver, who meet in India after a lengthy separation. Oliver is the younger brother, very idealistic. He is preparing to take his last vows as a Hindu monk. Patrick is a thriving business man, a publisher who has a wife and children in London. He also harbors a secret. He has a male lover in the states in California. He publicly admires his brother’s convictions, but privately criticizes Oliver’s choices. Although this book is more about sibling rivalry and the competitiveness that can derive from those relationships, I think now of the secret Patrick was keeping from his family.
He loved his wife and children and the support they symbolically gave to his successful business life. What man doesn’t want the breadwinner chevron on his jacket, proving how well he can financially care for the Misses and kids at home in the six bedroom mansion? But his heart wasn’t there. His heart belonged to a strapping young man who dreamed of him every night in America.
As I stand outside the coffee shop waiting for Edward to pick me up, I peer back inside through the front glass, window-shopping the scenery inside. Auden and Sallie are busy with customers, each with beaming smiles of five star service that whisper “fuck you” under their breath to needy customers. I don’t remember ever standing here on the outside, the business inside set to a different soundtrack of traffic speeding by on the street behind me. There is no hiss of the coffee maker, no bubbly gurgle of milk being steamed, no up sells of syrup shots, no “thank you come again.” I am Patrick in London and this is my family. And I can’t help but wonder if there on the inside of The Latte Da, there is a space in Auden’s head, in his heart, dreaming of me.
