Chapter Eighteen

Lynn

Evening was just beginning to deepen the blue of the eastern sky when Dana and Lynn began the return walk to the inn, each carrying the treats they’d bought. Lynn had a whole slew of things to remind her of today, and the thought warmed her.

“So what was your favorite thing that we ate?” Dana asked. Lynn giggled; there was no way Dana could’ve missed the fact that Lynn loved every piece of chocolate she put in her mouth, but Dana didn’t seem tired of hearing about it.

“My favorite thing? Not to put too fine a point on it,” Lynn replied, “but those chocolate-covered strawberries were pretty much what I think heaven should taste like.”

“I could go for that kind of heaven,” Dana agreed with a little chuckle.

“I posted that picture we took of our chocolate hoard,” Lynn grinned. “This one lady I work with at the daycare loves sweets as much as I do, and she’s going to turn green with envy.” She turned to look at Dana while they walked. The sea sparkled to their left, and it was remarkable how similar Dana’s eyes were to the color of the waves. “How about you? What was your favorite?”

“I’m a big fan of that chipotle drinking chocolate,” Dana said after a moment of thought. “I always thought hot chocolate was just the stuff that came in packets. It’s sort of like seeing that geeky kid from elementary school all grown up and looking sexy. Like, you’d never expect it, and then—bam. Holy crap.” She spread her fingers in an exploding motion to illustrate how she’d been blown away by the deliciousness of chili-infused hot chocolate.

Lynn was caught up for a second, wondering what Dana must’ve looked like as a kid. With her red hair and freckles and that independent attitude, she had probably been an adorably adventurous, headstrong little girl. Lynn suddenly found herself thinking of Pippi Longstocking and imagining Dana living in that crazy house with suitcases of gold coins, going on crazy adventures, defeating sea monsters, and saving horseshoe crabs (once she figured out the difference).

What would life have been like if they’d grown up as friends? It almost felt like they had, in fact. And even if they had grown up side by side, Lynn was pretty sure Dana would still be “all grown up and looking sexy” now.

She shook herself out of that daydream quickly. Dana’s just lonely, Lynn told herself. Like me. We just want friends.

Thoughts of Marie had stayed at the back of her mind all day, but now they pushed their way forward. A woman with a girlfriend shouldn’t be thinking she was lonely...but Marie sure did make her feel like that these days.

The past several hours were night and day in comparison with her recent date at the gallery with Marie. There was no tension, no expectations, no eggshells to walk on or defenses to build.

Frankly, the difference should’ve made her reconsider rather a lot of things, and she knew it.
