CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

It was lunchtime before the police cleared out. Hoon had called Detective Holden directly, suspecting he may be more understanding of the situation than the average Vegas copper.

Also, he couldn’t remember the American number for 999.

Holden had rocked up with a squad of gum-chewing, gun-wielding, uniformed cops. They’d arranged an ambulance for Curly, who was miraculously still breathing. And, after all the explanations had been given and cross-checked, Harry had been placed under arrest and led away.

His gun, it turned out, wasn’t registered in his name. Nor, in fact, was the Mirage Manor hotel, where he’d been squatting for just shy of the five years that would’ve allowed him to legally claim the place for himself. A stay in prison was going to put paid to that plan.

Despite some pretty stern questioning, there was no talk of Hoon or Alvin facing prosecution, even when a dazed, mostly naked US Senator was carried down the stairs by two policemen and a member of the Secret Service.

He was hurried out to a waiting black Sedan, but not before Hoon snapped off a couple more photos and sent them whooshing off through the electronic ether.

Eventually, after some moderate-to-heavy interrogation in the hotel’s dilapidated restaurant, Holden sent the Uniforms away, looked around at Hoon, Sarah, and Alvin King in his full Elvis Presley regalia, and shook his head.

“I’m going to tell you what I don’t want,” he announced. “I don’t want to see the three of you again anytime soon. I don’t want you causing trouble. Or, if you do, then I don’t want to hear about it. I think that’s fair, isn’t it? I think that’s a reasonable request.”

Hoon shrugged. “Can’t promise anything, but I’ll do my best.”

Holden’s laugh was dry, but genuine. “I’m sure you will.” He handed Hoon the fake passport he’d found on the theatre floor. “You might want to get rid of that. A better cop than me would have questions.”

Hoon took the passport, gave him a little wave of thanks with it, then slipped it into his back pocket. Beside him, Sarah yawned so hard she almost split her whole head in half, and he had to fight to stop himself following suit.

“And get some rest,” Holden said, though his concern seemed to be mostly aimed in Sarah’s direction. “You look like you’re ready to drop.”

Sarah tapped her forehead in salute, then covered her mouth to hide a second yawn.

The detective looked around at them all again, gave another shake of his head, and set off for the door.

He had almost reached it when he stopped and turned back. “Oh! I meant to say, Mr Hoon. I looked you up.”

“Oh, aye?”

“Yeah. Public knowledge stuff, mostly. But you’ve had a very interesting career.”

“It’s had its fucking moments,” Hoon confirmed. He tried not to look pleased about the comment, but there was a suggestion of pride in the angle of his head and the lines of his shoulders.

“I especially liked the piece they did on TV about your experience in that shopping mall,” Holden continued.
