Flight 15, Miami to Guatemala City

KAINO HAD NEVER flown first class before. He swirled his comped rum and Coke and took in the surroundings and the flight attendants in particular. “Posh shit, Coop.”

“And?” Bolan asked. He knew Kaino had been waiting hours to detonate.

Kaino growled low and let it boil over. “What the hell, man!”

“What the hell what?”

“Telling that redheaded Russian bitch where we’re going.”

“Actually she’s blonde,” Bolan said.

“And how do you know that?”

“I know for a fact the carpet matches the drapes.”

Kaino made a pleased noise and painted his own mental picture. He scowled again and got back to business. “Then why the hell did we need to meet if you knew it was going to go to shit?”

“It was always going to go to shit. Her team was already on its way out of Miami. They’ve been working their way up the food chain, just like us.”

“So if they were going to leave anyway, then why take the meet?”

“Val wanted to make sure it was really me.”

“And?”

“I let her know it was,” Bolan said.

“You really think she’s going to meet you in the food square for tamales and make lovey-dovey in Guatemala?”

Bolan smiled in memory and sipped his club soda. “She’ll meet me for tamales.”

“You sure she won’t just shoot you in the head and leave you facedown in your food?”

Bolan had developed a very good read on Valentina Svarzkova over the years. He smiled again. “I give it fifty-fifty.”

“And Igor and Ivan? What if the hammerheads throw down on you, as well?”

“Last I saw, you have lightning in both hands, Master Sergeant.”

Kaino threw back his rum and Coke. “Well, you are a charming motherfucker. Maybe she’ll just go all gushy and give up everything.”

“I think she can give up background. I think we’re ahead of the game when it comes to going forward. That’s why she’ll meet,” Bolan said.

“So if we’re ahead of the game, why meet? Why give them anything?”

“Why do you think, Kaino?”

Kaino grinned. “Because we’re going to war, Igor and Ivan are some serious fucking cannon fodder and you want to see if the new drapes match the carpet.”

Bolan reclined his seat and pulled his ball cap low over his eyes. “Nothing gets past you, Kaino.”
