These findings indicate that, for most employed persons, work serves more than just an instrumental purpose. If the most obvious immediate aim of work, an adequate income, were assured, most of those interviewed say they would still continue with some kind of employment. The Morse and Weiss (1955) study asked a useful follow-up question (p. 194): “Suppose you didn’t work, what would you miss most?” The most frequent response involved the social contacts, 31% referring to “the people I know through or at work, the friends, contacts.” Twenty-five percent said they would miss the “feeling of doing something, [they] would be restless.” One eighth mentioned the work itself; the “kind of work I do” was the thing they would miss the most. And 9% mentioned a sense of “doing something important, worthwhile, [a] feeling of self-respect.”

The 1957 SRC study, “Americans View Their Mental Health,” also asked a follow-up question: “What would be your reasons for going on working?” The most frequent response categories were:
