Creating a plan is a waste of time if you don’t regularly set aside time to keep it up to date. Back up your data on a regular basis, purchase additional equipment if you need it, and make arrangements to use other computers and offices if you need to – in other words, implement your plan. You owe it not only to yourself but also to your customers to be prepared in case of disaster.

Antivirus protection without a needle

Antivirus group Sophos says only 0.4 per cent of e-mails are infected with viruses, well down on just a year ago. But it identified 2,000 new threats in August 2006 alone, bringing the total number of recognised malware programs to more than 186,000. As an online businessperson, you’re going to be downloading files, receiving disks from customers and vendors, and exchanging e-mail with all sorts of people you’ve never met. Surf safely by installing antivirus programs such as:

Norton Internet Security 2006 by Symantec Corporation (go to www.symantecstore.com and select UK site): This application, which includes an antivirus program and a firewall and lists for £49.99, automates many security functions and is especially good for beginners. A standalone version, Norton Anti-Virus, is available for £39.99, but we recommend the full-featured package, which includes a firewall that will block many other dangerous types of intrusions, such as Trojan horses.

AVG AntiVirus by GriSoft ( www.grisoft.com): Many users who find Norton Internet Security too intrusive (it leaves lots of files on your computer and consumes a great deal of memory) turn to this product, which comes in a free version as well as a more full-featured version for just under £20.

Sophos Anti-Virus Small Business Edition ( www.sophos.com): Another popular free program, Sophos is a British-based company with a global reach. You can’t buy its products through its Web site, but it gives you a directory of shops where you can.

Internet Security Suite by McAfee (go to www.mcafeestore.com and select the United Kingdom store): This is the leading competitor to Norton Anti-Virus. This is its most comprehensive program and costs £49.99. You can get lesser packages for between £20 and £45. Check out the Web site and assess what they’ve got on offer.
