Chapter Sixteen

Macy walked into the room with an upset Mazy in her arms. She had only caught some of what Lynn was saying, but from what she had heard, it seemed like Lynn was serious about Brendan, and that meant that she needed to back off. She had already started to realize that even though the woman was perfect for her, she would never be able to be with her, but she was thankful to be a part of the other woman’s life, and at this point, her day could only get better. “Hi, everyone,” Macy said, waving. “Sorry that we are late. We ran into a snag.”

“Hello, Macy and Mazy,” Alisha said, welcoming them. “Everyone has a life. We can’t expect to be on time all of the time. How have you guys been?”

Macy started to explain the situation that she had encountered with Gina and how it had affected Mazy. Mazy hadn’t really spent time with her birth mother, so Mazy had left the babysitter’s sad and confused. Gina had promised her that they were going to see Henry, which had really upset Macy. And at this point, Macy felt vulnerable and worried that someone was going to try and take her child away from her. She had watched the police take Gina away for attempted child abduction, but she wasn’t sure that the woman wouldn’t attempt to take Mazy again. She told the group how upset she had gotten over the situation, watching Lynn as she spoke. Lynn’s eyes saddened as she spoke, and she could almost feel the warmth of the other woman’s emotions as she opened up.

When Macy finished speaking, she focused her attention on the group, listening as people empathized with her ordeal. She was happy that she could talk to these people about the things that were going on in her life, but part of her wanted more than anything the support that intimacy could bring, and she knew that the only person that was going to make everything feel all right was Lynn, but she knew that was an idealistic thought.

Macy watched as Mazy calmed down, playing with the other children around her. She was happy to see the little girl engaged in activities with the other children, but she needed to figure out what she was going to do from now on. She loved Rhonda, but after Macy started thinking about how easy it was for Gina to walk into the babysitter’s house and get to Mazy, she was reconsidering the whole babysitting idea.

“Mommy, it’s time to go,” Mazy said, pulling at Macy’s hand.

Macy smiled at Mazy. She loved that name. Mommy. It was a new thing for the little one to call her that, but she wasn’t sure that she could ever get used to it. “Alright, come on,” she said, getting up and walking out of the group circle.

“Macy,” Lynn’s voice said as she began to leave.

“Yes,” Macy said, turning around to see the familiar woman looking at her.

“If you need someone to watch Mazy, my mother would be able to help out,” Lynn said.
