Feathers or Bricks

The freight forwarder’s fees, like those of the customs broker, are not cut and dried. Prices are based on product, origin, destination, size, and weight. Air rates are usually based on either a per-pound or per-kilo weight or on the dimensional weight, whichever is greater. Dimensional weight is figured by multiplying length by width by height in inches and then dividing by 166 to arrive at the number of pounds. Why make it so complicated? The air carrier is compensating for the fact that a 48-inch square box of feathers, while weighing little, will take up more room than a 14-inch box of bricks.

Ray Tobia, president of Air Sea International Forwarding, emphasizes that it’s difficult to give ballpark estimates. This is especially true in an era of rapidly changing freight charges. However, as you can imagine, air charges from Newark, New Jersey, to London will be considerably less than charges for sending the same consignment from Los Angeles to London.

Freight forwarders’ ocean rates usually run per 20-foot or 40-foot container or, for loose freight, on a weight/measure basis—per cubic meter or per 1,000 kilos, whichever is greater.
