Shop around for fixtures and building supplies. You can often find great deals on everything from ceramic tile and bathtubs to electric ranges at home improvement store clearances and close-outs.

The old bathrooms have pedestal sinks, nice, deep cast-iron tubs, and ceramic tile on the floors and halfway up the walls. The owners will scrape and regrout the tile, update the faucets and towel bars, but otherwise keep the rooms in their original style—even, as much as possible, the new downstairs unit that will be wheelchair-accessible. The new bathrooms will be done with ceramic tile floors, whirlpool tubs, pedestal sinks, and period fixtures to match the rest of the house. Cost to upgrade five existing bathrooms: $2,500. Cost to create three new bathrooms: $45,000.
