Chapter eleven

I spent most of Sunday in my room, hiding from my mother as the darkness slowly spread further across her face. Two days back on my medication and it still hadn’t seemed to fade. Holding myself away from her felt hard; if it spread any further, I didn’t know what I would do.

As much as I thought he was crazy, Cay’s words on Friday night ran running rampant in my head.

I’ve seen the shadows from as young as I can remember, but I’ve seen the light too.You haven’t seen yourself, the way you truly are.We are pleiadians. We’re not out of this world, we’re ordinary.

There was so much of his story that made me cringe, but there was also so much that I didn’t let him say. As crazy as he was, he was the only one who knew what I was going through right now, and I think he knew how I could stop it.

I finally left my room at 5 pm, keeping my head down as I walked past Mum in the living room and storming straight towards the door.

‘I’m not going to be home for dinner.’

‘Hold on, where are you going?’

‘Since when do you care?’ I snapped back.

‘Maya, what do you mean? I’ve always cared! What’s going on?’

‘I’m just going around to a friend’s house for dinner.’ I opened the front door and walked out, hoping that she wouldn’t ask me any more questions, but she followed me.

‘Which friend?’

‘Cayha.’

‘Oh, okay … he just lives up the road, right?’ Her voice shot up two decibels of curiosity.

‘Yes, I won’t be home late,’ I said as I stepped outside the house. I could no longer stare at her, as her hair started to look like the long black mane of Medusa.

‘Hey Maya’ she called out.

‘What?’ I yelled as I reached the end of our fence line, staring at the half-dead pink rosebush in front of me.

‘You might want to fix up that attitude of yours if you want to get in the good books of that boy’s parents.’

I rolled me eyes and she walked back inside.

I didn’t even know exactly where Cay lived or if he would even be home. I was hoping to just turn up his court and find a house with a BMW in the driveway.

I strutted up the street and turned right down where he lived, looking left and right down every driveway until I stood still in the middle of the street, feeling hopeless. Each house seemed to be a little more exclusive than mine and Mum’s humble cottage. High electric gates, and double door garages.

I sat in a slump on the edge of the gutter. I didn’t even have his phone number; I pulled my phone out of my pocket and opened Instagram—maybe I could find him here.

I started to type his name into the search bar when …

‘Maya?’ I jumped, spinning around to see Cay standing in an open driveway behind me. ‘Are you okay?’

A man and a woman appeared behind him, both wearing black blazers, looking down at me sitting on the gutter.
