A Conversation

I wasn’t involved in this, and I didn’t find out about it for years. When Nicki left, she said she’d start something. I didn’t ask what that was.

While Chelsea and I were having our late-night conversations, Aunt Temple and Nicki had their own. Amongst other things, they talked about parenting a teenage girl. Aunt Temple had already told me she’d be taking out life insurance on herself, which I thought was morbid.

She and Nicki talked about that. And Nicki asked about my new backup Mom.

And when Aunt Temple told her she didn’t have anyone lined up, Nicki volunteered. She also told Aunt Temple, “I already had told Spenser she wasn’t going into the system. We would have adopted her.”

What could have been.

And so, I had a new backup mom, and Aunt Temple had a boatload of health insurance. And I didn’t learn of either of these for years, because neither would grow to matter.

Aunt Temple is alive and kicking. My story began with one death, but there aren’t any others waiting for you to read.
