Alex stares at the back of the door unable to make sense of what just happened.

He wants to yell, You're fucking right I am at Paul, because he's furious about one more decision Paul made about him that goes way beyond semantics.

He also wants to run after Paul and say please don't leave me alone, because the house is silent and empty in the sudden aftermath, and it's frightening.

He wants to cry, and he wants to throw something, and none of those are adult responses, so he doesn't.

Alex walks back upstairs. When Todd meets him at the bedroom door and rubs against his legs, his eyes start to sting.

His suitcase is at the foot of the bed, open, half-empty, the clothes and contents scattered across the room and all over the house. He looks at the clock on the nightstand, and tries to judge how much time he has before Paul gets back.

Then he starts packing.

He has to keep picking Todd up out of the suitcase.

"Hey, no," he says, when Todd tries to crawl in yet again. "You can't come, buddy. You don't wanna be Divorce Cat." His voice echoes and small in the stillness of the house.

Once he gets his bag downstairs, he sees that his hat is still tossed over the back of the chair in the kitchen, where he'd left it when they got in from the movie yesterday. Alex lets it stay.

And then he leaves.
