Mel made her way through Daedalusâs main corridor, tablet computer tucked under her arm. Sheâd heard the gossip along with everyone else in the city; the Genii were on Sateda, and getting the titanium there might be impossible after all. Theyâd retrieved some, but rumor said it wasnât quite enough, and that had gotten her thinking. Sheâd spent the morning in the 302 bay, going over specs and supplies, and the idea that had come to her in the middle of the night had started to look like something solid. It might not work â she was the first person to admit she was no technician â and it was a risk, but sheâd talked it over with Dwayne Grant, her second-in-command, and heâd thought it was a pretty good idea, too. Except, of course, for the one glaring problem, but theyâd agreed that getting the Stargate usable again had to be the top priority.
She paused in the engine room hatch, glancing around the spotless compartment. It still felt weird not to see an Asgard on board, to know that they were gone, that the Tauâri were on their own with a technology they only barely understood â but, then, Dr. Novak had been working with it from the very beginning. If anyone knew what she was doing with this stuff, Novak did. At the moment, though, there was no one in sight, and Mel frowned. Surely somebody ought to be on duty, even with Daedalus parked on Atlantis?
âColonel Hocken?â Novak popped up from behind one of the consoles like a skinny, disheveled jack-in-the-box.
âGot a minute?â Mel asked, with her most disarming smile, but Novakâs wary expression didnât change.
âSureâ¦â
âIâm hearing that theyâre still short of titanium,â Mel said. âSince the Genii turned out to be on Sateda. Our â the 302s â armor is titanium alloy, right?â
âYes,â Novak said. âBut we donât have enough spares to do any good. Dr. Zelenka and I already went over the numbers.â
âWhat if you took if off one of the 302s?â Mel asked. âThe shields are our main defense, anyway, and the armor is a double layer by the tail. Thereâs one piece that overlaps both of the under plates. Suppose you took off that redundant part?â
Novak tipped her head to one side. âI donât think Iâd call that armor redundant.â
âJust suppose,â Mel said.
âWellâ¦â Novak paused. âI donât know exactly how much is still missing, so I donât knowâ¦â
âHereâs what I was thinking,â Mel said, and held out the tablet.
Novak took it, frowned at the schematic of a 302, the plate Mel figured they could spare outlined in green. âWell,â she said again. âColonel, I see what youâre saying, but Iâm not comfortable removing armor. If you lose shields â and that always seems to happen â then youâre depending on a single layer of armor at a very vulnerable point.â
âA very small point,â Mel said. âAnd not that vulnerable. Hard to hit even if you knew to try for it. Look, Dr. Novak, weâre willing to take the risk if it means we can use the Stargate normally again.
