CHAPTER 14

ROSEMARY GLANCED OVER HER SHOULDER AT Jake. He was asleep, his breathing regular and deep, punctuated occasionally by a soft snore. He seemed to be sleeping an awful lot and looked tired even when he was awake. But, then again, if an alien intelligence was uploading centuries’ worth of memories into her brain while she slept, Rosemary supposed she would be pretty tired too.

She had not told Jake just how much jeopardy they were in. He was not used to this kind of life, as she was, and with all that was going on with him he was liable to panic. She had told him just enough, and frankly, that mind-reading trick of his had extracted more than she’d wanted him to know. Fortunately he seemed to be getting some level of control over it and found it as upsetting to read her mind as she did to have it read. And, also fortunately, she hadn’t been hiding anything when he had read her mind.

Thank God.

Bad enough that he’d known what she was up to and converted what could have been an easy turnover into a hostage situation. But, then again, it had been those strange powers that neither of them yet fully understood that had gotten them off the ship.

Personally, Rosemary didn’t give a rat’s ass about Jake Ramsey. She did, however, care passionately about her own life. And while it might not always be the case, right now, her life hinged on his.

When the console beeped, she started and cursed, so wrapped up in her thoughts that even that soft noise took her by surprise. She examined the signal, then her body relaxed and her lips curved into a smile.

She pressed a few keys, and Ethan’s darkly handsome face appeared on the monitor.

“Hey there, Trouble,” he said in his silky voice. Rosemary’s smile widened. That was his nickname for her; they always seemed to find trouble together. “I hadn’t expected to hear from you until you finished that cushy assignment you told me about—if then.”

Their relationship was unique in Rosemary’s experience. They had fought together, side by side, for seven years. They’d begun as employer and employee and soon graduated to equal partners. There was no one else she’d trust to have her back, and she’d saved his life more than once. The trust carried over
