Chapter Nine

Jerry looked in the rearview mirror as he was exiting the park and saw Tisdale looking back at him. He glanced at Gunter, who was leaning against the back of the front passenger seat. Even though the front seat was Gunter’s rightful spot, it seemed odd to see the lawman sitting in the back. Especially since the man had already made such a big deal about not wishing to sit there. Jerry checked the road in front and looked in the rearview mirror once more.

Tisdale pushed back his hat to meet Jerry’s gaze. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost. What’s troubling you, son?”

Jerry smiled an easy smile. “I’ve seen more than a few spirits in my time, but some surprise me more than others. This morning, you were ready to fight for this seat. Now you’re sitting back there like a judge being chauffeured to a trial.”

“I figured the dog earned that spot today.”

“Houdini helped too,” Jerry reminded him.

“Houdini? That be the pup’s name?”

Jerry nodded. “Yep.”

“He did good. You know he’s not like other dogs, don’t you?”

Jerry chuckled. “You mean the whole disappearing and reappearing thing? Yes, I know.”

“Then you also know he’s going to be a force to be reckoned with one day. Especially with that one there showing him the ropes.”

Jerry slid a quick glance to Gunter. “We all need our mentors.”

“Even you?” Tisdale asked.

Jerry nodded once more. “I’ve had a couple. If I had to choose, I would say my grandmother and my old boss had the most influence on me.” Instantly, Seltzer came to mind. Jerry made a mental note to call him.

“I believe it’s safe to assume your grandmother knew about this gift of yours. What about your boss?”

Jerry smiled. “I guess Seltzer knows just about everything there is to know about me.”

“And yet you’re not still working for him.”

Traffic slowed. Jerry glanced in the side mirror and moved to the left lane to pass. “That’s right.”

“Why not?” Tisdale pressed.

Jerry shrugged. “It’s a long story.”

“It’s a long way to Texas. You got anything better to talk about?”

Jerry laughed a half laugh as he checked the mirror and maneuvered back to the right lane. “No, I don’t suppose I do.”

“You were an officer of the law, yes?”

Jerry searched his mind. He didn’t recall ever telling Tisdale he was a state trooper. But I did mention it when speaking with Fred a few moments ago. How does he keep getting in my mind? He blocked Tisdale from getting answers he didn’t want him to have. “I was a trooper with the Pennsylvania State Police Department.”

“Trooper?”

Jerry decided to keep his answer simple. “State police have jurisdiction within the state they are working in.”

“You wore a star?”

“A badge,” Jerry corrected.

“You left that job for the one you have now?”

Jerry shook his head. “No, I got this one after I left.”

“You didn’t like the trooper job?”

Jerry was starting to regret agreeing to answer Tisdale’s questions. “It’s a little more complicated than that.”

“You had a job. You left the job.
